FELIX GONZALEZ
 

 

born in Havana, Cuba, Mr. Sanchez entered the National School of Art, "San Alejandro", Havana, and graduated with honors in 1975.  Shortly thereafter, he was appointed Professor of Art at the Ruben Martinez Villena Institute (Havana) where he remained until 1979.  In 1980 he migrated from Cuba to the United Stated, where he lived in Chicago, Illinois before moving to Miami one year later.  Throughout his art career, Mr. Sanchez has experimented in most mediums; however, during the past few years he has focused on oil paintings and paper mache sculptures.  The number of exhibitions and collections where his art has been shown include both Cuba and the U.s. Felix is a serious folkloric artist who chooses to use humor in the depiction of traditional Cuban customs and social commentaries. His mediums include oil on canvas, drawings, and papier-marche scultures. the quality of his work has earned him international recognition among collectors, galleries, and museums. He has been widely published and exhibited in museums. His work was selected and included in "Americanos:Latino Life in the United States" which is a book that was published by Little Brown and Company and is sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution. This exhibition is currently traveling throughout museums in the U.S. His work is represented in numerous private and public international collections.

"Alla, en la tierra de mis pasados suenos, de los tuyos, de los de Felix, que
se transportan en horas y mas horas de trabajo sobre la reunion ritual y
machista del hombre Cubano: El Juego del Domino.

De ese hombre hermoso, bronzeado por el caliente sol que amanece temprano y
se acuesta tarde; dejando las quemaduras de un dia lleno de emociones que casi
se termina en la bronca de una trampa. Ese hombre Cubano, con su machete
enganchado en la silla y listo para en cualquier situacion defenderse. Ese hombre
con su camisa de lino blanco, planchada y almidonada por la plancha de carbon
de la mujer olvidada, por un juego del Domino a la sombra tibia de la Ceiba
Cubana. De ese hombre Cubano con su Tabaco en la boca, de sombrero de Guano, de
bigote negro y rostro arrugado. De pecho belludo y ojos cafe, con el Ron en la
mano y la mirada al reves, desconfiado y siempre dispuesto a la bronca otra
vez. Guerrero fiel con su panuelo rojo de chango pa' "la buena suerte".

Asi, encontramos la busqueda nostalgica del Artista Felix Gonzales;
recordandonos para que no olvidemos esa estampa tan Cubana de la mesa de palo con
sillas de cuero de Chiva, frente al paisaje Cubano del cielo azul profundo, donde
la briza canta el ruido incansable de las fichas blancas de Marfil, del Domino
Cubano".

Was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. Mr. Suarez completed his artistic training at the San Alejandro National School of Art. After graduating with honors and merits in 1975, he dedicated his time to painting, sculpturing and teaching art during which time he was appointed Director of Curriculum for Artistic Education in the José Martin Institute. This position he held until late December, 1979 when he immigrated to Chicago and ultimately moved to Miami where he has resided ever since. Although he works with all types of mediums, the majority of his works are oil paintings and paper mache sculptures. His works have been shown in various exhibitions throughout Cuba and the U.s. He was commissioned by the Bacardi Museum to do a life size figure in papier-marche of a "Rum Runner". He was also selected and published in "Americanos:Latino Life in the United States" which is a book that was published by Little Brown and Company and is sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution. This exhibition is currently traveling throughout museums in the U.S. His work is represented in numerous private and public international collections.

"Una de las multiples visualidades de este Artista envuelto en las Artes del Papier Mache ( a la traducion Española = papel machucado ) es la expresion y la fotografica imagen que durante su trabajo, supo plasmar el caracter y la situacion, la Epoca y el mensaje. Con esas voces imponentemente roncas y agudas, rasgadas y enganadorasestos vendedores de Billetes de Loteria, siempre se guardaban multiples de los buenos numeros de billetes en el bolsillo; para los conocidos y los amigos. Toda una Epoca remarcada por los clasicos afiches Cubanos pegados en el muro delabrido anunciando viajes y espectaculos; de la Cerveza Hatuey al delicioso Partagas fumado en la mañana. ¿Estafador? ¿Ganador? Que importa, si despues de todo, se trata de un juego a la sombra de su sombrero que con la mirada te engaña!
